Cabled Mittens in Philosopher's Wool

Cabled Mittens in 3 ply Philosopher's Wool

Size: Approx. 4 1/4" wide and 9" long
Yarn: 1 skein 3 ply chunky weight
Tension: Approx. 18 sts = 4"
Needles: Double Pointed, US size 6 (4.0 mm)

Abbreviations:

Seed Stitch: Over an odd number of stitches. Every row: *K1,P1*, repeat to last stitch, K1.
2/2 RC: Place 2 sts on cable needle and place in back, K2, K2 from cable needle.
2/2 LC: Place 2 sts on cable needle and place in front, K2, K2 from cable needle.
SKP: Slip 1 knitwise, knit the next stitch, pass slipped stitch over.

Directions:
Cast on 32 stitches and join in the round carefully. Knit 11/2 inches of K1,P1 rib. On the last round of ribbing, increase 8 stitches evenly around the cuff for a total of 40 stitches.

Right Mitten:
Rounds 1 and 2: K5, seed st 3, K4, seed st 3, knit to end of round.
Round 3: K5, seed st 3, K4, seed st 3, K8, increase 2 stitches, knit to end.
Round 4: K5, seed st 3, K4, seed st 3, K8, inc 1, K2, inc 1, knit to end.
Round 5: K5, seed st 3, K4, seed st 3, K8, inc 1, K4, inc 1, knit to end.
Round 6: K5, seed st 3, 2/2 RC, seed st 3, K8, inc 1, K6, inc 1, knit to end.
Continue in this manner until 14 stitches have been increased (54 sts on needles), making sure to cable every 6th round.
Place 14 increased stitches on a piece of waste yarn for thumb to be worked later.

Left Mitten:
Rounds 1 and 2: K25, seed st 3, K4, seed st 3, K5.
Round 3: K17, increase 2 stitches, K8, seed st 3, K4, seed st 3, K5.
Round 4: K17, inc 1 st, K2, inc 1, K8, seed st 3, K4, seed st 3, K5.
Round 5: K17, inc 1 st, K4, inc 1, K8, seed st 3, K4, seed st 3, K5.
Round 6: K17, inc 1 st, K6, inc 1, K8, seed st 3, 2/2 LC, seed st 3, K5.
Continue in this manner until 14 stitches have been increased (54 sts on needles), making sure to cable every 6th round.
Place 14 increased stitches on a piece of waste yarn for thumb to be worked later.

Both Mittens:
Continue knitting in pattern the 40 mitt stitches for 14 more rows or until 1" less than desired length.
Start decreasing for the top of the mitten, making sure to keep in pattern as follows:

Round 1: SKP, k16, K2tog, SKP, K16, K2tog.
Round 2: SKP, K14, K2tog, SKP, K14, K2tog.
Continue in this fashion until 8 stitches remain.
Cut yarn leaving approximately a 10" tail. Using a tapestry needle, thread tail through remaining 8 stitches twice; pull firmly and darn in the end.

Thumbs:
Work both thumbs alike.
Knit the 14 stitches from waste yarn onto dpns and at the same time pick up 2 additional stitches along the inner portion of the thumb (16 stitches).
Knit thumb until desired length. K2tog around the entire round (8 stitches) and cut yarn leaving approximately a 10" tail. Using a tapestry needle thread tail through remaining 8 stitches twice, pull firmly and darn in the end.

 
 

To Wash: Hand wash in a large sink with Sunlight Liquid detergent in hand warm water. Allow to soak for 2 or 3 minutes, drain and rinse in several sinks of warm water. Squeeze gently and spin out excess in washer. Lay out flat on a towel, by wood stove or radiator until dry. Our wool washes easily and beautifully or you may dry clean.
