Tuque in 2 ply Philosopher's Wool
Tension:
20 sts = 4" (5 sts = 1") over stocking stitch
Yarn: 1 skein Philosophers 2 ply wool
Needles: 3.5 mm Circular needles , 40 cm long
Abbreviations:
C4F: Slip next 2 stitches on to a cable needle and hold at front of
work. Knit next 2 stitches from left hand needle. Knit 2 stitches from
cable needle.
Adult
Tuque:
Cast on 120 stitches. Join to form circle and rib in K1P1 for 3 inches.
Begin pattern as follows:
Row 1: K5, *(P2,K4) three times, P2,K10*, repeat from * to * to last
25 stitches, (P2,K4) three times, P2,K5.
Row 2: Same as Row 1.
Row 3: K5, *(P2,C4F) three times, P2,K10*, repeat from * to * to last
25 stitches, (P2,C4F) three times, P2,K5.
Row 4,5,6,7,8: Same as Row 1.
Repeat Rows 3 to 8 inclusive five more times.
To
Shape the Crown:
Row 1: K2tog, K2tog, K1, *(P2tog,K4) three times, (P2,K2tog) five times*,
repeat from * to * to last 25 stitches, P2tog,(K4,P2tog) three times,
K1,K2tog,K2tog.
Row 2: K3,*(P1,K4) three times, P1,K5 *, repeat from * to * to last
3 stitches, K3.
Row 3: K3, *(P1,K2tog,K2tog) three times, P1,K2tog,K1,K2tog *, repeat
from * to * to last 19 stitches, (P1,K2tog,K2tog) three times, P1,K3.
Row 4: K3, *(P1,K2) three times, P1,K3 *, repeat from * to * to last
3 stitches, K3.
Row 5: K2tog,K1,*(P1,K2tog) three times, P1,K3 *, repeat from * to *
to last 3 stitches, K1,K2tog.
Row 6: K2, *(P1,K1) three times, P1,K3 *, repeat from * to * to last
2 stitches, K2.
Row 7: K2, *(P1,K1) three times, P1 K3 *, repeat from * to * to last
2 stitches, K2.

Row 10: Knit:
Row 11: K2tog across the row.
Break
yarn, leaving bout 18". Draw this yarn through the stitches remaining
on the needle. Fasten firmly. Trim with a pompom if desired.
Child's
Tuque: To make a child's tuque, cast on 90 stitches. The cable patterns
repeat three times rather than four as in the adult tuque.
To
Wash: Hand wash in a large sink with Sunlight Liquid detergent in
hand warm water. Allow to soak for 2 or 3 minutes, drain and rinse in
several sinks of warm water. Squeeze gently and spin out excess in washer.
Lay out flat on a towel, by wood stove or radiator until dry. Our wool
washes easily and beautifully or you may dry clean.
